What do free radicals and vampires have in common?

You’ve heard of them. You know they’re bad. But do you know why? Here’s an introduction to Free Radicals 101.

Free radicals are molecules like any other molecule, such as oxygen or hydrogen. What makes them different — what makes them dangerous — is that they’re unstable.

You see, molecules come with pairs of electrons. Having electrons in sets of two makes them balanced. But free radicals are molecules that have lost one of their electrons. And they will do anything to get that electron back…even if it means stealing one from another molecule.

And that’s exactly why free radicals are so dangerous to human cells: they’re like vampires. In a free radical’s quest for an electron (or blood, to follow the vampire metaphor), it will attack another innocent molecule (or victim). Then that molecule turns into a free radical (or vampire). Now, instead of one free radical molecule going about damaging healthy cells, you’ve got two. Once those two start attacking still more molecules, they become four, then eight, then sixteen. In fact, just one free radical can set off a chain reaction of one thousand events.⁴ And all one thousand of those events damage your tissues and accelerate the aging process.

In fact, the most widely accepted theory of aging argues that time isn’t responsible for aging our bodies — free radicals are.⁵

Unfortunately, free radicals are unavoidable in modern life. They’re created by external factors, such as pollution and ultra-violet light. But our own bodies generate free radicals every day, through normal processes like exercise and breathing. You can’t get around them. So you’d better fight them.

Just as our bodies naturally generate free radicals, they also generate antioxidants. And antioxidants have the ability to neutralize free radicals. How? By “donating” an electron to the free radical, which stabilizes it and ends the destructive cycle.

There’s a good argument to be made that most health conditions start in the colon. After all, the colon is the garbage disposal of the body. Unless it’s cleansed regularly, waste — which is acidic by nature — builds up.

In fact, autopsy reports show that the vast majority of Americans have layer upon layer of compacted waste and mucous sitting dormant in their colons!

Pioneering nutritionist Dr. Bernard Jensen writes in his book Dr. Jensen’s Guide to Better Bowel Care that while he was attending the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, autopsies were performed on 300 individuals in the college anatomy laboratory. Goldenseal Root: Prized by Native American herbalists, goldenseal is used for disorders of the mucous membranes, which line the respiratory, vaginal, and gastro-intestinal tracts.¹⁷ It is included in this formula to cleanse the GI tract of microforms.

Gentian Root: A classic "bitter" herb, gentian stimulates the secretion of gastric juices - promoting better digestion — and supports overall GI health.¹⁸

Fennel Seed: Fennel is a mild digestive herb with a sweet, licorice-like taste. It tonifies the stomach and helps relieve flatulence.¹⁹

Rose Hips: Not only are rose hips a concentrated source of vitamin C, they also help the body — including the GI tract — respond appropriately to inflammation.²⁰

Barberry Root: Barberry is a blood purifying herb very similar in action to Oregon Grape root. It stimulates the flow of bile, which improves liver function. When the function of the liver is enhanced, it is better able to rid the blood of toxins.²¹
